I got an invite and grabbed it to The Durban Fashion Fair. It basically joins hands between local Fashion Designers and the eThekwini Municipality Business Support, Tourism and Markets Unit. This bunch of ministers and representitives are putting money into our "young” talented designers by offering them a week of offering workshops and finally a chance to showcase on the runway! 10 of them get to go on to intern in Milan. Lucky bunch! The Durban Fashion Council's Chairman said it best: "they are not in the fashion business but rather the business of fashion" - the point is at Fashion Weeks and shows like these, buyers and media need to be front row. The glitz and glam of it means nothing. To make money and get the local clothing industry going again means buyers need to order and rails need to be filled in store. I totes agree. There were a handful of pieces from some Designers that woke me up and made me take notice - Karla Lorta and Jamal Nxedlana were two to look out for in womenswear but all in all the menswear took it for me. Blokes are gonna be well dressed there in Durbz. Oh and on a side note - if you have that stage and that audience, make sure your threads aren't left hanging, I beg you! A rather big thank you to The Durban Fashion Fair team for hosting and looking after us, props to you!
